The club meets at different climbing walls on Tuesday and Thursday evenings allowing people to pick the one closest or go to both. This is a good opportunity to meet club members as well as getting fitter. Check on the Facebook group for who is going each week, or ad-hoc visits to other climbing walls such as the Golden Gecko in Romsey.
Wessex members get a discount at both walls. Take your membership card with you to take advantage of these.
Tuesdays At Calshot
Calshot is the best indoor climbing wall on the south coast (well that’s the newsletter editor’s opinion anyway!). It has over 80 rope lines, offering both top-roping and leading. Some of the walls are 14m high and very over-hanging. They have a good group of route-setters and they aim to reset routes every six months. The setters have varying styles but they all make the most out of the corners, slabs, arêtes and other features available – you definitely need to think in “3D” here!
There is a small bouldering area and a couple of self-belaying ropes should you happen to arrive before anyone else turns up.
Tuesday night from around 7pm is the usual time to find Wessex people there (the wall, not the bar!). We’re a friendly bunch and always willing to climb with new faces (mixing abilities isn’t a problem indoors) and it’s always possible to swap around climbing partners halfway through the evening. If you show your WMC card then you qualify for the reduced entry fee.
One final important note: Calshot is a large hangar which tends to amplify whatever the temperature is outside. So in winter you’ll need your down jacket and a hat, whereas in summer it’ll be sweltering!
Thursdays at The Project
The Project Climbing Centre is a dedicated climbing and training facility run by climbers for climbers. We aim to provide the best facilities and the best support for climbers of all ages and abilities.
The Project is a new climbing wall in the Dolphin Centre in Poole. Only bouldering at the moment, but with (long-term) plans to include roped climbing too. WMC members qualify for concession prices (£6 standard, bundles and monthly membership available), so bring your membership card. There’s generally people there from around 7.30.
